April 7, 2009 Fire Department Meeting
HIGHLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT MEETING MINUTES APRIL 7, 2009 Members present: Chief Carlson, Ass't Chief Ron Cairns, DJ Ronkainen, Mike Ross, Dawn Ross, Justine Ross, Kally Ross, Ron Smith, Sherrie Craft, Jeremy Francisco, Misty Francisco, Marvin Landreth, Jessica Carlson and Ken Wilk Meeting Meeting Meeting called to order at 7:20 by Chief Carlson. Secretary's report was presented. A motion was made to approve the Secretary's report by Kally and 2nd by Ken. Motion Carried. Treasurer's report was not presented. Mike stated that he requested approved procedures to follow from Annie Moss, Town Clerk, regarding purchases and disbursements. Chief Carlson stated the report would reflect the previous months balances and expendititures since all current expenses are not released until the monthly town board meeting which is held after the monthly business meeting. Correspondence: Douglas County Tornado “Skywarn” training program was presented in poster form for April 13, 2009 at the Emergency Operations Center in Duluth. National Weather Service to do training. The Muscular Dystrophy Ass'n “Fill the Boot Day” is to be held on Sunday, June 14th , 9pm to 4pm. Fire Association Meetings: Chief Carlson and Sherrie attended the Fire Association meeting. They discussed the Associations insurance policy available to all member firefighters. The “Be Somebody” Campaign TV advertisement will be the same as last year. Fire/EMS Report: Fire/EMS Report: There was one structure fire as mutual aid to Lake Nebagamon. Chief Carlson discussed methods and errors that occurred, then reviewed how the fire was fought and more effective methods that could have been employed. Committee Reports: Grants were discussed by Dawn: She stated that all grants applied for need to be approved by the board. She also suggested that we need to focus on what grants would be helpful for the department that should be requested. Truck Committee: FEMA engine is right on schedule. The 2009 FEMA grant is ready to be submitted. Fund Raising Committee: The golf outing has been designated as August 2nd. Chief Carlson to Chair, with Sherrie, Misty and Ron as committee members. Misty Francisco suggested that a Barbque feed would be a good idea. Raffle License's have been approved. A gun and/or bow raffle was suggested. Old Business: Chief Carlson stated that the Engine is still slated for a June delivery from Stainless Repair. The DNR grant is finished but not yet granted. Old Business from the Floor: None New Business: The “Be Somebody” campaign will be staged next to the Gopher Hole Lounge on May 15th. Dawn stated that the HVFD Grandma's Marathon runners will do a run that starts at and ends at the Gopher Hole Lounge. The reporter/photographer for the Superior Telegram will be interviewing the HVFD Grandma's Marathon “Be Somebody” runners sometime during the day. The Gopher Hole Lounge is sponsoring a “Fire House” Chili Recipe contest starting at 6pm in conjunction with the “Be Somebody” campaign. Posters were presented for distribution by members. The Muscular Dystrophy Ass'n “Fill the Boot Day” is to be held on Sunday, June 14th , 9pm to 4pm. The “Fill the Boot” event is to be held in Ole's parking lot. Members are asked to come and help in the collection. We can sign up for shifts. The Firemen's banquet, sponsored by the Town of Superior FD, will be held at the Elks Lodge, 1530 Belnap, Superior, on May 9th. The cost will be $20 per person to be paid for by the department. A head count is needed by the April 21 training meeting or RSVP to Todd, Sherrie or Marvin. It was discussed that “no-shows” would have to reimburse the ticket price to the Township. Chief Carlson stated that he would like every member to join the WSF Ass'n. It was moved by Ron C. and 2nd by Dawn R. to accept the Chief's recommendation of membership with the WSF Ass'n. The $20 membership fee is to be paid by the Department per Chief Carlson. Motion carried. A membership in the Wisconsin State Firefighter's Assn. Provides at least the following: A $1500.00 ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT POLICY, WHICH COVERS YOU 24 HOURS A DAY, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU ARE ON OR OFF FIRE DUTY. A DISABILITY INCOME POLICY WHICH PAYS $100.00 PER WEEK FOR UP TO 260 WEEKS, IF YOU ARE INJURED WHILE ON ACTIVE DUTY. Visit their website at www.wi-state-firefighters.org. Chief Carlson suggested we vote on whether the department should accept the “Adopt-a-Highway” program on CTH “S” from Minnesung Rd. to Stones Bridge. Kally R. moved and Justine R. 2nd that we should accept the program. Motion carried. Chief Carlson outlined a comprehensive 12 month training plan. It is intended to be “results oriented” per Chief Carlson. New business from the floor: None Motion to adjourn: Motion to adjourn: A motion to adjourn was offered by Mike R. and 2nd by Kally R.
